New Bedford, Mass., Junior middleweight "Prynce" Ray Oliveira Jr.(7-0-0, 2 kos) starts off the 2017 CES boxing season against Jose “Rated R” Rivera (2-0-0, 2 kos) of Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Oliveira just recently fought on December 2, 2016 against Matt Probin (2-1-0) of Lewiston, Maine. After 6 rounds Oliveira won by UD. Judges scored the bout 59-55; 60-54 and 60-54.
Pattee Mak: Thank you so much for taking the time out of your training schedule to answer a few of my questions. Before I ask you about this fight I noticed your dad [Ray “Sucra” Oliveira] (47-11-2, 22 kos) was in your corner your last fight. Are you 100% committed with training with your Dad?
Oliveira: Yes.
Pattee Mak: Refresh my memory, was he your head corner man or a second? If the head what advice did he give you in between rounds?
Oliveira: He was the head. At this moment he’s the only one that I’m working with. Basically my dad told me the same stuff, to stick to the same things. Once we get in the ring and he’s in the corner, direction doesn’t change much. We stick to the game plan especially if it’s working.
Pattee Mak: Recently the WBC ruled they do not allow a fighter’s father to be the chief second in the fighter’s corner during a fight. What’s your thoughts on this?
Oliveira: Honestly, I really don’t understand why they would do that. I really need to go back and read the ruling. I did see posts on facebook but I didn’t think it was legit. In my opinion it’s pretty ridiculous. I don’t see how they can make that rule. I don’t care what sport you are in, it goes against life. You turn to your father for guidance and advice. I think they should rethink it. There are a lot of son and father teams that didn’t work but there are some that did. I don’t know if there was an incident. My opinion besides that it’s ridiculous, we’ll deal with it when we get there. This fight isn’t for a belt so we’ll deal with it later.
Pattee Mak: Will this be a 4 or 6 round fight and the contract weight?
Oliveira: 6 rounds. 154.
Pattee Mak: I’m pretty sure you’ll make weight. You always come in shape for your fights.
Pattee Mak: I personally know Rivera. He doesn’t have a big amateur back ground but I know he’s going to come to fight without giving up his winning record. Back for Rivera’s pro debut in 2016 he was looking to step up and was scheduled to fight “Jabbin” Joe Wilson (3-4-0) but due to an injury sustained by Wilson the fight was called off. What do you know of anything about your opponent?
Oliveira: I don’t know much about him. I saw a couple of vides on the computer and what I heard from a couple of fighters. I’m not one to put down other fighters especially when they step up to the challenge. I have a lot of respect for him. I don’t see anything special for this kid to give me any trouble. I’m glad that he’s willing to step up. As far as him going in there with Joe Wilson, he’s a pretty good fighter but doesn’t hit as hard as I do. I’m not worried about him. I don’t think honestly I will have a problem with him. He’ll come to fight and the next guy comes to fight but they all say that. But it’s different once the fight is happening. They are changing their minds about their game plan.
Pattee Mak: Rivera has only fought twice. Why take this fight? How did this fight come about? Did he reach out to you or?
Oliveira: I actually leave everything up to Mike [Parente] and my head trainer. I believe Mike contacted my head trainer and my answer was “Yes”. I’ll fight anybody. I don’t know how it came about. It’s a tough fight for him to step up too. It may have come from my dad but I don’t think it was from his side.
Pattee Mak: Why haven’t you been fighting more frequently?
Oliveira: Difficulty. Complications. Dealing with camp and trainers and gym stability. It’s hard to get a fight when you are undefeated. No one wants to take their first loss.
Pattee Mak: What will be your game plan going into the ring that night?
‘
Oliveira: To do whatever my dad tells me to do. I have no game plan. I do what I’m trained to do and to do what my corner tells me to do. I want to win and hurt the guy and to keep fighting. If it was up to me I’d be fighting all day. I love it. I don’t make a plan. I listen to my corner.
Pattee Mak: Are you selling tickets?
Oliveira: Yes. They can reach me through facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pryncray) or my instragram. (prynce508cv).
Pattee Mak: Anything else you would like to add?
Oliveira: I just keep trying to work up the rankings.
Pattee Mak: Thanks so much for the interview. I wish you both the best of luck.
Oliveira: Thank you.
