MYKEY WILLIAMS MOVING UP TO THE PRO LEVEL

Amateur standout Mykquan “Mykey” Williams (45-13-0) from Manchester, Connecticut is currently training with head trainer and Connecticut Hall of Famer Paul Cichon at the Manchester ROC and will soon be saying bye to his amateur days and hello to the pro division. During those times he was kept busy but a new season awaits him. His manager, a well-known figure in boxing, Jackie Kallen needs no introduction and has been involved in the boxing game for many years.

Pattee Mak: I’m so excited for you. You are turning 18 on April 6, 2016 and you’ll be signing on the dotted line a management contract with Jackie Kallen. She already signed the contract. There’s no looking back now. What does this mean to you?

Williams: It means a lot to me. It’s something that I’m looking forward to and I can’t wait.

Pattee Mak: Are you at all disappointed that you didn’t get to go to try out for the next Olympics?

Williams: Not really. Sometimes you just have to move forward and make the best out of it.

Pattee Mak: Now that you have a manager usually the next step is a promoter. Has your team been speaking with any?

Williams: Yes. We have been in contact with Lou DiBella.

Pattee Mak: That’s great that you are chatting with DiBella. Hopefully it’ll come together and it’s even more of a blessing that he promotes shows locally in your area which is where your fan base is. How have your fans been reacting to you turning pro?

Williams: They are excited and happy for me and they wish me the best.

Pattee Mak: On Saturday, February 6, 2016, you were in the finals of the Western New England Golden Gloves. You went up against Anthony Laureano (18-25-0) from Hartford, CT and you lost by a split decision. John Scully on my facebook page commented on a post where I tagged both you and Laureano in which said, “Anthony is one of the most relentless amateurs I've seen in a long time...he just doesn't let u fight your fight...he forces you to fight HIS fight”. Do you believe this comment is correct?

Williams: Too a certain extent. I knew he was gonna pressure me and throw a ton of punches but he was barely landing any. I was blocking a lot and countering a lot. But I take nothing away from Anthony he didn’t judge the fight.

Pattee Mak: Do you think your loss has a negative impact on anyone who is looking to promote you and do you feel the split decision was an accurate account of the fight?

Williams: No. I don’t think it’ll have an impact on any promoters looking at me. I don’t believe it was an accurate account.

Pattee Mak: Do you feel you are ready to turn pro and leave your amateur days behind? Money will be involved, different size gloves etc etc.

Williams: Yea I feel like I’m ready to make that next step and leave my amateur career behind. The gloves size and all the other things that come with it doesn’t bother me.

Pattee Mak: What do you expect from Kallen?

Williams: I expect her to move me in the right direction and work out the best deals for me as my manager and protect me as her fighter.

Pattee Mak: How did you and Kallen meet up and this meeting of minds come together?

Williams: We met several years ago through my trainer, Paul Cichon. We flew her down here for her to watch me fight at our dinner show. Since then, we have been in contact and the rest is history.

Pattee Mak: Anyone in mind that you’d like to fight pro?

Williams: No one comes to mind. I’m just starting out.

Pattee Mak: Will it be a 3 year contract?

Williams: Yes through 2019.

Pattee Mak: Will you be fighting pro at super welterweight?

Williams: No. Welterweight 147.
